Update: Canada Post Strikes Create Challenge for Adeara

November 18, 2024

Adeara Recovery Centre is concerned regarding the significant impact of the ongoing Canada Post strikes to Christmas season giving. As a women’s recovery centre primarily funded by private giving, we depend on year-end donations to support women overcoming addiction. This critical fundraising period, which makes up a significant portion of our annual budget, is now at risk due to disruptions in mail delivery.

“Our clients often state that Adeara has saved their life. This lifeline is possible because of our community of support, especially at the year end. Compromising our anticipated funds at this crucial time will impact the support we can offer the women and children as we head into the new year.” – Lori Patrick, Executive Director

Direct mail campaigns are a key part of Adeara’s fundraising efforts, particularly in December when generosity is high and year-end tax deadlines are fast approaching. According to Imagine Canada, nearly one-third of charitable donations in Canada are made during the last quarter of the year (Imagine Canada, 2022). For Adeara, these donations are essential in helping women transform their lives, reunite with their families, and build futures free from addiction.

Should the postal strike carry into December, it will also disrupt Adeara’s ability to connect with supporters through holiday cards, impact updates, and other communications that celebrate the difference donors make in the lives of women and their families.

How You Can Help

We are asking supporters to consider alternative methods of giving during the postal disruption to ensure women in recovery continue to receive the care they need. On December 3, Adeara is launching its Giving Tuesday campaign, where the first $5,000 in donations will be matched by a generous donor. Please visit our website early on Giving Tuesday, December 3 to make your donation and double your gift.

    1. Donate Online – Make a secure online donation at adeara.ca.
    2. Give by Phone – Call Adeara directly at 780-423-5516 ext. 1009 to donate.
    3. Visit In-Person – Drop off donations at Adeara’s public office during business hours (9-4pm weekdays) (6936 68 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6B 3C5). Please ring the doorbell when you arrive and one of our staff will securely accept your donation.

“Adeara has battled through its share of ups and downs throughout our 26 years of serving women. While this strike poses another possible threat, we know that it can also bring great opportunity to strengthen us as a community. Identifying the problem and making the necessary adjustments can in fact bring greater rewards. Our supportive community continues to amaze and encourage us as we prioritize offering hope, healing and restoration to our city’s most vulnerable people.” – Lori Patrick, Executive Director
